Karrat REE

Avannaa located a Rare Earth Element (REE) mineralisation during the 2007 field season whilst conducting regional prospecting. The mineralization is located in a sequence of amphibolites and mafic schists belonging to the early Proterozoic Karrat Group. The grab samples had estimated total REE oxides + yttrium oxide of 0.8 to 1.7 wt %.

Further prospecting was conducted in 2008, demonstrating that the REE mineralisation occurs as an up to 20m thick layer with a strike length of over 1.5 km. The down dip extent is unknown. The anomaly is located on the coast in low lying easy to access terrain.

Future work will include channel sampling, bulk sampling and drilling.

Rare earth elements are specialised commodities that are often used for high-technology applications in electronics, energy efficient lighting, hybrid cars, LCD screens and super-magnets. Most of the world’s rare earths are produced from one mine in China and there is a growing desire to see some diversity of supply.
