The Disko Bay gold province comprises projects at Eqi, Itilliarsuk and Saqqaq. Regional review by Avannaa together with field observations has enabled the mineralisations to be placed into the context of an orogenic gold emplacement model. These insights have enhanced the prospectivity of both individual projects and the region. Avannaa believes the association of gold and diamondiferous ultramafic lamprophyre dykes shows strong affinity to giant orogenic gold deposits such as the Abitibi in Canada and it is hoped that similar deposits can be found in Disko Bay.
The area of interest of covers 210km2. There are numerous gold mineralisations ranging from 5 g/t over 10m to 24 g/t in individual samples. There are several soil gas hydrocarbon (SGH) anomalies of score 5.5 and ppm gold in soil samples. Gold is generally hosted in an Archean greenstone belt similar to the mother lode of California.
The deposits are located within 5km of the coast where deepwater fjords, ice free for 9 months of the year, provide simple logistics and export route. The terrain is gentle, with excellent hydropower potential and the mining method would be open pit.
