Itilliarsuk Iron Ore

Itilliarsuk is a peninsula located in the northern Disko Bay region. The rocks consist of Banded Iron Formation (BIF) of Archaean age lying in an east-west striking supracrustal belt, and exposed on the south coast of Nuussuaq peninsula.

The rocks were prospected for iron ore by the Cryolite Company Øresund and by Nuna Oil (later to become NunaMinerals) in 1996. Kryolitselskabet Øresund A/S established the presence of the ore-body from an aeromagnetic survey conducted in 1978. Follow up work recognized a low grade deposit (average 20% magnetite) of 150-200 million tonnes (Mt).

A team of geologists was deployed to a fly camp at Itilliarsuk from the base camp at Pingu during July 2008 to work primarily on the iron ore target. Work undertaken included detailed 1:1000 scale mapping, chip sampling and channel sampling. A helicopter airborne magnetic survey was flown over the ore body.
